I've been working on a way of getting subtitles onto episodes. I realise that Youtube does have a way of putting subtitles on, but I don't like to be tied to their methodolgy.  Anway... to start with I'll do key episodes, and see how it goes. It's reasonably painless but a lot of typing and pausing (I've made easy shortcuts to go back and forth by 3 seconds).

-- hmm getting a copyright warning so can't put "Grange Hill" in the titles. Also it triggers adverts if it understands what the topic is.

For 8.6 I put the subtitles directly into Youtube, and it works!

Part 1 of 3 here, and follow the link inside for more

Episode 10.11 is complete with subtitles.  Not a particularly good recording .. but workable

In 3 parts, follow the link from each. Subtitles done as an SRT file which means you can apply it to other recordings, e.g. with VLC, if you know how!

Hopefully won't be pulled off Youtube too quickly.

Certainly better than Youtube's Closed Captions function. Anyone else tried it. It's impossibly rubbish.

Ah, we're back again! Thought the forum had gone for good...

Here's the second part to the barge trip as subtitled again for the deaf.  Yes Youtube's in built closed-caption leaves a lot to be desired, and seems to have a fixation with certain words like "Clinton".   In the future though, I can see this as being something that will work - perhaps it works best with American accents.
