School Days: 1981-1991
One of just three female heads in Grange Hill's 29-year
history - and probably the one regarded with most affection.
Grange Hill was a very different school from the all-girls
institution Mrs McClusky taught at before her appointment,
with its vandalised conveniences and unruly pupils. Yet
the ambitious, career-minded woman wasted no time in making
her presence felt. Straight away she reintroduced school
uniform, made optional some years earlier, proving she
wouldn't be deflected from her aims. Woebetide any pupils
(or colleagues) who attempted to challenge her authority. |
But Mrs McClusky was by no means dictatorial. She cared about
her young charges and if a pupil was having problems she'd
often visit them at home. Her efforts with Danny Kendall showed
her in a softer, more maternal light. From then on she took
more of a pastoral interest in her young charges and it was
perhaps fitting that her leaving party in 1991 was an emotional
affair. She found her deputy, Mr Bronson, impossible to work
with and approached her work with level-headedness against
his oppressive ideas.
DID SHE ACTUALLY TEACH?
Yes - English and Maths. Although administrative duties kept
her out of the classroom for the most part. She also spoke fluent
Russian.
A THATCHER FIGURE? Some
might think so. But her hairstyle was about the only similarity
Mrs M had to the Iron Lady - she never persecuted anyone and
was always very fair.
HOME LIFE: Little is known
about Mrs McClusky's life out of school. Happily married to
Mr McClusky, though he was never mentioned.

Mr Baxter, Mr Hopwood, Miss Mooney, Scruffy McGuffy, Mr Smart,
Mr Bronson, Mr Robson, Mr Hankin, Mrs Monroe.
CURRENT WHEREABOUTS: Believed
to still be working as a guidance officer for foreign teachers
in this country - the job she left Grange Hill for. There's
a rumour she was spotted at Grange Hill after the 2002 fire.
