Steve Green learned the hard way at Grange Hill. It
was his first teaching job following graduation and
he arrived in the classroom full of textbook ideas.
Being the pupils's friend and earning their respect
was how he preferred to operate rather than laying down
the law. In practice the pupils tore him to pieces so
he was forced to adopt a more no-nonsense approach to
discipline. Mr Green could still be taken in by the
pupils; Togger and Abel almost got away with letting
him do their Citizenship project for them.
Things were starting to settle down for Mr Green when
tough-nut Taylor Mitchell rounded on his inexperience
and naivety. This systematic campaign eventually pushed
Steve too far and ended with him hitting his pupil. Although
Taylor agreed to cover for him, it was all too much for
Mr Green and he walked out of Grange Hill wondering if
he still had a career.
REASON FOR LEAVING: Wanted a fresh start after the Taylor fiasco.
MR GREEN'S SCHOOL REPORT
Series 27 On his first day, Mr Green tries
to play it softly with Year 8 but they wind him up and
swap their name cards around. Mr Malachay reminds him
he'll never control the class if he doesn't establish
who's boss, so from then on he toughens up. Mr Green takes
Togger and Abel to meet Bill Winston, the oldest surviving
resident of Grange Hill in a previous life. Taylor's taunts
become too much for him and Steve strikes Taylor in the
secretary's office. Mrs Bassinger walks in but sides with
Mr Green. Taylor agrees to cover for Steve but he still
wonders what the future will bring.
