Clare came from a middle-class background and lived in
an affluent part of the area. Yet she preferred to play
the average, archetypal working-class black girl. Material
things and the luxuries she could enjoy played second
fiddle to fiercely standing up for what she believes in;
Clare exuded confidence and tackled racists and bullies
with the greatest of ease. She did not believe in dating
white boys and it was hard explaining this to her friends
without being seen as racist. Indeed, Clare runs the risk
of alienating everyone if the truth about her circumstances
is discovered.
CLARE'S
SCHOOL REPORT
Year
12 Clare confronts Spencer after his dad was
jailed. She later sabotaged a van belonging to racists,
who retaliated by trashing the band's instruments. Claire
rejects Arnie's advances on a double date; when she admits
it's because he's white she finds herself isolated. Arnie,
though, is relieved she didn't reject him because of his
epilepsy.
Year 13 Carl discovers
Clare's true background and is furious she's been stringing
him along. Clare helps Carl with his project at the
drop-in centre and she wins the respect of the youths
there. She clashes with her father when she refuses
an offer of a place at law school.
