IT'S
PHIL REDMOND CBE!
GRANGE HILL CREATOR
Phil Redmond has been awarded the CBE for his services to broadcasting
in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The boss of Mersey TV, which now
makes Grange Hill, was one of several media figures rewarded by Her
Majesty in her annual awards.
Phil,
55, originally trained to be a quantity surveyor but moved
into comedy writing in the early 1970s. But it was with Grange Hill
that Phil hit the big time. He created the series in 1976 based
on his own experiences of school, and the first episode went out
two years later.
"I
was actually surprised at how pleased I was, it's pretty cool",
Redmond said on hearing the news. Mersey TV is now Britain's leading
producer of drama and has a 60-episode contract to produce Grange
Hill. GH Online believes Phil's gong is well-deserved and a long
time coming. Congratulations Phil!
