NEW
BEGINNINGS
Written by Phil Redmond
Togger and Tigger are pleased that for once, they don't have to make
sure Lucy is ready to leave. She's already given them the head start
- with something moving in her school bag. Once in school, the contents
of the bag cause much excitement - Alison has spotted it's a dog while
Bryn and Ducket (hanging upside down like a bat) wonder what the girls
are so fascinated by. McDonnell demands to know what the attraction
is too, but Lucy manages to hide Lenny out of his view.
Alex looks forward to a fresh start - finally free of the Humphries
brothers. Tigger, meanwhile, has romantic concerns on his mind - he
tells Ed he's resolved to ask her out this term and that he only hesitated
to spare Alex's feelings. Ed tries to get Tigger to hang back and
he misses his chance just as everyone goes into assembly, and once
assembly is over Tigger bottles out when he comes face to face with
Alison. An apprehensive Kathy arrives for her first day on the staff
of Grange Hill. McDonnell warns her that pupils may play on her ex-pupil
status and he's proved right when Kathy almost rumbles Lenny in the
girls' toilets. Lucy again manages to shield Lenny and then hides
him in the cleaner's cupboard before heading off to assembly. Kathy
delivers a nervous speech outlining the new plans for the CLC, which
she is deputy manager of, and as the pupils leave the hall they share
memories of some of Kathy's most embarrassing moments when she was
"one of them".
New Year 7s Theo and Laxo are shepherded in by Abel and Laxo instantly
takes a fancy to Tanya. Togger is most put out to discover Mr McDonnell
not only has a top the same as his, but his new role as Deputy Head
also won't keep him off the football pitch. Tanya's smooching with
Togger causes much embarrassment to Jenny, but she has the last laugh
when Ms Rawlinson sends Tanya home to change her very skimpy clothes.
Bryn and Ducket spot Lucy and Rachel tending to Lenny in the cupboard.
It must be the girls' lucky day, as they avoid getting busted for
a third time as Miss Bettany pulls them up. Luckily, the teacher is
deflected as Bryn and Ducket side-track her. Next stop for Lenny is
the toilets - but he manages to run off with half a toilet roll wrapped
round him! Theo and Laxo spot Lenny making off down the corridor and
Laxo spots the opportunity for fun. On hearing Miss Bettany say she's
new, Laxo scares her witless by claiming there's a mouse on the loose!
Later, Theo and Laxo discuss girls and Laxo resolves not to make a
move until Year 9, saying that by waiting they'll all flock to him
years down the line.
In the made-over CLC - now known as "The Grange", Alison
is cagey when Sammy tells her she thinks Tigger was about to ask her
out. Ed tries to assure Tigger he's only looking out for him. Alex
announces he wants to join the school "buddy" system, keen
to make sure the newbies don't have the same horrific experience of
Grange Hill that he had to put up with.
Rachel and Lucy frantically chase after Lenny, and the dog is almost
spotted by McDonnell who stops the girls once more. They then head
to the CLC but are disturbed by Kathy. Tigger spots his sister acting
suspiciously and she's forced to confess Lenny is on the loose. Ed
and Alex join the search party and as the Year 10 lads almost mow
down Ms Rawlinson, Togger is by now on the case. They follow Lenny
into the changing room, where lo and behold Mr McDonnell catches them
red-handed. A stern McDonnell - who still hasn't caught sight of the
missing mutt - warns all three Johnsons to keep on the straight and
narrow.
By now the exhausted Lenny is taking forty winks in the cleaners'
cupboard, Bryn and Ducket find him. Bryn points the search party in
the right direction - but by the time they arrive Lenny has vanished
despite Ducket keeping watch. Lenny has now made his way to the CLC
with the three Johnsons in hot pursuit. Tigger fails to rugby-tackle
the dog and finally the game is up when Kathy busts them. But she
agrees to let them off on this occasion. As Togger and Tanya head
off on a hot date, he orders Tigger and Lucy to explain themselves
to their parents. |
