Alex Pickering
Alex stands out in a crowd - not because he wants to, but because of his size. He hoped Grange Hill would be a chance to start afresh, but his new classmates made life hell for him; especially Chloe and the Humphries brothers. Things got so bad, Alex tried to take his own life in the school pool but was saved by the quick-thinking of Baz and Spencer. With the help of best friend Ed and his developed sense of self-depreciating wit, Alex has learned to deal with comments about his figure. Alex is naturally vulnerable but maintains an outwardly cheery disposition, so long as he doesn't feel threatened. Alex is now determined to prove to everyone he's learned from last year's mistakes and takes his role as "buddy" to the Year 6s very seriously.

Connections
  Best mates: Ed, Tigger
Love interest: Alison

Background
Year 7 Alex has high hopes for Grange Hill, but soon finds himself isolated when Ed finds a more interesting freidnd in Tigger. Alex is cruelly bullied by Mooey and Chloe's gang. His only friend is Alison but they fall out when he reacts badly to her eczema. Feeling totally alone, Alex tries to drown himself in the school pool. In the nick of time, Spencer arrives and rescues Alex with Baz. When he returns to school, Alex is welcomed back into the gang.

Year 8 Alex upsets Alison by showing Mooey Alison's eczema to frighten him off. He seeks advice from Togger and they make up. Mooey warns Alex to throw the G-1 racing final in his favour - but having promised Tigger the prize money, Alex wins and Mooey steals the money. Alex makes smoothies for the Indonesian reception.

Year 9 Max and Mooey muscle in on Alex's successful smoothie stand. As their demands become higher Alex tries to end his enterprise, but is soon forced to turn from bullied to bully himself, stealing Ed's camera and roping a reluctant Bryn into helping him meet the Humphries' increasingly outrageous demands. In the process he alienates Tigger and Ed but in the end it's Togger who helps bring the Humphries to justice. Alex's personal champion Alison urges the boys not to turn their back on their friend again.

Year 10: Alex signs up as a "buddy" to the Year 6 pupils, determined they will have a better experience of Grange Hill than him. He connects with Serena and persuades her to speak up about her dyslexia. Alex is upset to find out Alison has been seeing Ed behind her back, but a spark develops between him and Sammy.
