Togger is convinced
he's blown it with Tanya, though Abel tries to convince him otherwise.
To complicate things further, Uncle Tucker has offered him six months'
labouring work in Germany and with no Tanya to look forward to it's
an increasingly attractive option. When Abel comes to school to return
his books, he tells Tanya about Togger's job offer and she's crestfallen.
Karen is nervous ahead of the dance finals. The thought of having
to dance with Max does little to boost her confidence but Ross tells
her his ankle is better and he thinks he's up to resuming their
partnership. Max doesn't take the news that his services are no
longer required well! Kathy and Martin complete their final exams
but Kathy is certain she'll have to repeat the year.
Ed and Tigger are looking forward to the dance contest, hoping for
success with Sammy and Alison respectively. Sammy is keen for Ed to
notice her and thinks her glasses will put him off. The excluded Alex
meets his friends through the seperation of the school gates and they
agree to go as a fivesome. Conceding Togger is all but out of her
life, Tanya has a tearful heart-to-heart with Karen who herself ends
up blubbing; she's desperate to win because she's never achieved anything
before. Meanwhile, the desolate Togger phones Peter to confirm Germany
while Tanya deletes his details from her mobile.
The dance contest arrives and Karen's nerves continue to get the
better of her. Miss Gayle hovers around and embarrasses everyone
with her raw enthusiam! Tanya is surprised to find a small gift
waiting for her - it's a pair of hairdressing scissors from Togger.
Her mood lifts instantly but she's still hoping he'll put in an
appearance. Karen and Ross finally take to the dance floor; their
performance is interrupted when Jenny and Jake make an exhibition
of themselves (taking Tanya's instruction to "show Karen support"
too literally!), but out of all the contestants so far, the Grange
Hill duo are the only pair to impress tough judge Sofia.
Sammy and Alison need the loo but the myopic Sammy ends up finding
the VIP spread. Sammy starts knocking back wine as if it were cola
and it goes to her head pretty quickly. By now Max has arrived, out
for revenge on those who have upset him recently and finds the two
girls. He snatches a bottle of spirits from Sammy. Next on his hit
list is Ross, whose injured ankle he savagely kicks in and finally
Martin, whose orange juice he spikes with the spirits he acquired
earlier.
Max's evil deeds don't take long to cause chaos - Ross and Karen
are back for the dance-off but have to pull out when Ross can't
carry on. Karen is devastated her chance has gone. Martin suddenly
finds the room spinning and, not knowing why, freaks out. When he's
taken to hospital to be checked over, Kathy realises what's happened
and, leading a trio of sixth form girls, goes to confront him in
the gent's. Glib to the last, Max insists when you've come from
the austere upbringing he's had, you have to steal and bully to
get by. But the smile disappears when Kathy tells him she'll have
happy memories of school to look back on, but he won't and people
will just remember him as a thug.
Ross has some good news for Karen - they've come second in the competition
and will be going to Amsterdam after all! He wants to carry on dancing
with Karen but is keen to keep things "strictly ballroom".
Ed, Tigger and Alex feel deserted by the girls but Alex decides it's
a good time to present Ed with a new digital camera. Tigger quickly
realises Alex stole the original camera and storms off with Ed in
disgust. Sammy reappears, by now totally plastered, and declares her
love for Ed who is most embarrassed. When Sammy is violently sick
Ed and Tigger make their break, leaving Alison and Alex to comfort
her.
Tanya steps out of the dance contest and sure enough, Togger is
waiting for her. Before long the pair are bickering over Togger's
impending move to Germany, but Togger sees his chance and steals
that first kiss. Tanya's response is to slap him but they instantly
fall into each other's arms.
