It's
the day before the school Christmas fayre. Gonch and Hollo are larking
about with sponges in the corridor but blag their way out of trouble
when cornered by Mr Smart. They are later pulled up by Mr Bronson
on their way to the hall. Roland begs his dad to cancel his haulage
run but Mr Browning said there is no way out of it. He gives Roland
some money before setting off. Dejected at the thought of spending
Christmas alone, Roland ambles towards school. When he gets there
he cannot escape Bronson's watchful eye and finds himself in detention.
Gonch and Hollo help with the fayre preparations - to get out
of English! Baxter notices Gonch's wet trousers from their earlier
sponge-throwing antics. In the toilets, Imelda Davis plans to skive
History to pounce on Gonch. Helen begs her not to, but her mind was made up. N5 are busy in the artroom
making the finishing touches; Mr MacKenzie helps Zammo and Banksie
with their "shaky hand" machine. Janet realises Roland
is depressed but he refuses to talk; he tells Fay he was spending
Christmas with Fabienne in France. Imelda drenches Gonch with a
bucket of water. Baxter comes along and humours Gonch and Hollo's
excuses. He makes Gonch remove his trousers and, forced to wear his PE shorts,
Gonch waits for a chance to get his own back on Imelda.
Calley is dreading Christmas as she can't decide whether to spend
it with her birth mother or her parents. Ronnie suggests she split
the day. As everyone leaves school, Roland hides in the corridors.
A stranger dumps a donkey in the school shed; Mr Griffiths unwittingly
locks the animal in. Mr Bronson is horrified to see the crib decorated
with football scarves and litter and summons the staff. Mrs McClusky
dismisses it as high spirits. Roland takes refuge in the art room
overnight.
 The
day of the Christmas fayre arrives. Gonch and Hollo think they
can get in free but Claire, on the door, is having none of it.
Then Baxter sends them to fetch another table. Gonch unlocks the
door and gets the shock of his life when the donkey races out! They
catch up with the animal on the playing field but only succeed
in chasing it into the school! After the duo collide with Ronnie,
Baxter catches up with them and orders them to get his table.
Roland is hogging the shaky hand stand, desperate to win the £25
prize. Janet realises Roland isn't going to France at all; eventually
he confesses. Janet invites Roland to her's for Christmas dinner;
for once he is glad of the offer. Gonch
and Hollo resume their donkey hunt; Roland and Janet are stunned when
the animal walks past! Calley is dreading negotiating her Christmas
plans, but her mum turns up to say Angela will be coming over on Christmas
Day. Everyone queues to throw sponges at Mr Baxter, with Gripper Stebson
returning from obscurity to score a perfect bullseye! Before Imelda
can throw hers, the donkey bursts into the hall causing utter chaos!
Gonch catches Imelda off guard, pushing her into a bath full of water.
The donkey finishes, somewhat appropriately, in the middle of the
crib. Mr Bronson finds a note around its neck; the donkey's name
is Harriet and please could you look after me or I will have to
be put down. Mrs McClusky thinks Harriet is the perfect touch
to the crib - and wishes Mr Bronson a Merry Christmas!
